People are fiercely territorial. We mentally divide the space and objects around us into "our" side and "their" side, guarding what's "ours" ferociously. Except, of course, when the person who's invading our space is someone we want to come (much) closer; then the whole thing becomes a fun ‑- and fascinating ‑- game.
